Portrait sketch in oils

Every meeting, as well as the 2 minutes from each member, we take turns to give a 10 minute presentation. This can take any format, and be on any aspect of the member's business. It's a great way to get to know each other better; building the relationships and understanding between members that BIG prides itself on.

I prefer pictures to words so tend to do an art demonstration of some sort during my 10 minute demo. Recently I took a portrait sketch I'm experimenting with to see how much of the portrait I could paint in 10 minutes. I'd previously painted a number of canvases in different colours and sketched the same portrait on each to see what effect different base colours have on a painting.

For this demo I chose the pale umber as I know from experience that some of the brighter colours take a little more effort to cover and I wanted as complete a portrait as I could manage in the time.

10 minutes at BIG

It's surprising how much can be painted in 10 minutes, whilst explaining my process and answering questions. It's not easy painting at speed from an angle (to enable everyone to see) but it gave me enough to work on. I took a further 30 minutes at home to add a little more detail and adjust some elements but I decided to leave it very much as a sketch and not work too much in to it. Certainly for the purpose of my initial coloured background experiment, it's complete.
