It was a pleasure to speak at the BIG Networking meeting this week. I’ve been attending BIG for over a year now and it’s genuinely one of my favourite networking groups. The relaxed atmosphere, supportive members and friendly conversations make it a great place to build relationships and learn from other local businesses.
During my presentation, I shared some of the simple steps every business can take to improve their fire safety without feeling overwhelmed.
Many people assume fire safety is just about having a few extinguishers on the wall, but there’s much more to keeping a building safe and compliant. We looked at the basics, including:
Fire Risk Assessments – understanding the risks within your building.
Fire extinguishers – choosing the correct type and ensuring they’re serviced annually.
Fire alarms – why weekly testing is so important.
PAT Testing and electrical safety – helping reduce one of the most common causes of workplace fires.
Emergency lighting – making sure people can find their way out if the lights fail.
Fire doors – simple checks anyone can carry out to make sure they perform when they’re needed most.
One of the main messages I wanted everyone to take away was that fire safety doesn’t need to be confusing. With the right advice and a proactive approach, businesses can stay compliant while creating a safer environment for their staff, customers and visitors.
At Actifire, we believe in educating and supporting businesses rather than simply turning up once a year to complete a service. We work with organisations of all sizes across the East Midlands and beyond, helping them understand what they need, why it matters and how to stay on top of it.
A huge thank you to everyone at BIG for the warm welcome and for making every meeting such an enjoyable way to network. If you’re a fellow BIG member and have a fire safety question—no matter how small—please feel free to come and have a chat. We’re always happy to help.
